Ukraine to Receive Aid Through CIDA Program
|

| Ottawa- February 24, 2009 - The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) is pleased to learn that the Government of Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), will be continuing to play an active role in facilitating the evolution of Ukraine’s young democracy. Significantly, Ukraine is the only former Soviet republic and the only European state included among the 20 countries that Canada has targeted for its aid initiatives. 80 percent of Canada’s bilateral assistance is being focused on these 20 designated countries.
“Canada’s support for Ukraine is especially welcome at a time when the country is entering a critical phase in its post-Communist history while facing many additional challenges due to impact of the global economic crisis,” stated Jars Balan, Chair of UCC’s Canada Ukraine Committee.
“The UCC congratulates the Honourable Beverley Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, for her efforts to improve the effectiveness and accountability of CIDA programs, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper for his government’s steadfast commitment to Ukraine,” stated Paul Grod, UCC’s National President. “The Congress further wishes to thank the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, for his attention to issues of concern to the Ukrainian Canadian community.”
